What is a Burning Bush? Euonymus alatus, known variously as winged spindle, winged euonymus, or burning bush, is a species of flowering plant in the family Celastraceae, native to central and northern China, Japan, and Korea. The common name "burning bush" comes from the bright red fall color. It is a popular ornamental plant in gardens and parks due to its bright pink or orange fruit and attractive fall color. The species and the cultivar 'Compactus' have both gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. However, this plant is regarded as an invasive species of woodlands in eastern North America, and its importation and sale is prohibited in the states of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.

More to Love for the Burning Bush
The Burning Bush is the most colorful shrub you can find. You'll get fire-engine red foliage in the fall that lasts for months! These plants are green from spring until mid-summer, and then, in late summer and early fall, you'll see the leaves catch fire and turn bright red. No matter where you plant these shrubs, they will demand attention with their incredible color. Plant them in rows for an amazing display of vibrant red color.
Burning Bushes make incredible privacy hedges that only get 6 feet tall. They are excellent for mass plantings, formal hedges, entryways, and borders. The shape is an upright vase that slowly spreads and presents horizontal layers with maturity. They're easy to grow, too! These plants are extremely hardy and very adaptable to a variety of growing conditions.
Outdoor Care
Climate and Placement Plant your Burning Bush in an area that receives full to partial sunlight (4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day on average). Although your Burning Bush prefers full sunlight, it will tolerate shade. Burning Bushes prefer acidic soil, but will adapt to your natural soil even if it is sandy or heavy in clay, as long as the soil is well-draining. Dig a hole that's large enough to accommodate your Burning Bush's root ball, place your shrub, and backfill the soil. Once completed, mulch the surrounding soil and water.
Watering Let your surrounding soil dry to the touch down about 2 inches. Once your soil is dry in this area, give your Burning Bush a deep watering at its base.
Pruning Fertilize your Burning Bush at the beginning of every spring and in the middle of summer with an acidic fertilizer.
