Planting and Care: Gardenia adapts to many types of soils, including sand, loam and clay, but the soil must drain well. It's essential to plant Gardenias at the proper depth, slightly higher than the soil level to ensure they're not buried too deeply. Water newly planted gardenias thoroughly, and if natural rainfall doesn't provide 1 inch of water each week, hand-water to keep their roots hydrated. Typically, you'll fertilize your Gardenias twice a year - a light application after frost has passed in spring and another 6 weeks later. Gardenias don't need much pruning; if you want to shape your shrubs, prune them after their initial heavy blooming in summer, but don't prune past late summer to avoid reducing the number of next year's blooms.
